Recently,
with canned snail, I bought and drunk two cans of Kozel White, which is Czech's
leading beer company’s newly released lager beer product. Kozel White adds the
scent of fruit. I think the taste is much better than average lager beers I
recently had and it goes well with widely available cheap snacks. It has been
more than 10 years since he entered the Korean market with "Kozel
Dark", which I think did good job in the market. Actually, there are two
beer halls named “Kozel something (I do not remember exact name)” nearby my
apartment and I visited one of those places. This Czech stout has been popular
brand since it had been imported in Korea and the company now definitely want
to strengthen its presence in Korea by new weaponry to participate in summer
beer war.
Last Month, with
their executive officers, Kozel held a press conference at a Czech restaurant
in Itaewon, Seoul to introduced Company’s new lager. Kozel launched the new
product in the Korean market for the first time in the world. The decision is
based on the judgment that if Korean consumers who are picky about quality and
service levels and are sensitive to trends love their newly released beer, they
are likely to succeed in the global market.
"Both
product development and testing were based on the Korean market to develop beer
that suits Koreans' tastes," said Kamil Ruzek, chief brewmaster of Kozel.
He added, "It is a beer for everyone looking for a new type of beer, not a
traditional lager beer." Regarding the reason why Korea was selected as
the Kozel White test bed, he explained, "It is because Koreans love Kozel
and Kozel Dark continued to grow solidly even during the Pandemic.
"Except
for Europe, Korea is the largest market. Kozel plans to release Kozel White in
the European market next year after examining the response of the Korean
market. Matthew Holmes, head of Kozel's Korean branch, emphasized, "We
will try to communicate closely with Korean consumers and become a brand that
can be loved for three or five years through new strategies and collaboration. "They
explained that their new product is characterized by a balanced sweetness and
refreshing feeling, but when I gulfed this beer, I did not feel any sweetness
without bitterness. The color is also yellow, which is a typical tint of most
of lager beer available in the market. The alcohol content is 3.5 degrees, a
bit lower that other products. The taste, I think is milder than Hoegaarden.
According to
the company’s press release, Kozel also paid attention to pairing food so that people
could enjoy beer in a different way. However, in the Kozel pubs, as far as I
remembered, most of menus were pizza and pasta sort of, lacking Korean dishes thus
I think if the company really want to claim their product pair well with
variety of foods, they need to implement diversification of menus in their beer
halls. Of course, the company seems to make new attempts to appeal to Korean gourmets;
Kozel also held a tasting event with Chef Lee Won-il at a large mart to
commemorate the launch of Cozel White. At the tasting event, dishes made with the recipe of
Korean food expert Mr. Lee were prepared for food pairing.
Cozel White,
released in a 500ml can, can be purchased at large discount stores and
convenience stores in Korea. It can also be found as draft beer at pubs and
bars, but like other foreign beers, probably, will not be available in more
conventional eateries. When I went to CIU, which was nearest convenience store
from my place, only two cans were left thus I thought this new lager sold well
now. It remains to see how well Kozel White do during coming summer season.
